Hagerty's Service operates a police impound and storage service.  At the direction of the law enforcement agencies we contract with, vehicles are towed to our yard for storage until the owners retrieve them.  If a vehicle has not been claimed after approximately 72 hours, we begin a title search process in order to find out who the owner of the vehicle is.  This process also notifies the Department of Motor Vehicles that we intend to sell the vehicle if it is not claimed by the owner within about 40 days.  This sale is called a lien sale, because it satisfies a lien which we have on the vehicle for towing and storage fees.

Each month, many vehicles remain unclaimed.  Those that are not claimed are lien-sold at a public auction held weekly, currently every Tuesday at 12:00 noon at our business office located at 6212 Ferguson Dr., Commerce CA 90022.  A list of the vehicles coming up for sale can be found by clicking Auction Lists.

Key benefits of buying a car at our lien sale auction:

  • A variety of vehicles are available, including cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles
  • Different cars available every week
  • Low prices
  • Great for second cars, or a first car for a student
  • Great for resale
  • No entrance fees

Be sure to read our Public Auction Policies and Procedures section below for more information about our public auctions

Public Auction Policies and Procedures

Our auctions are conducted every Tuesday, except national holidays, at 12:00 noon.  Vehicles may be visually inspected at 11:30am.  Admission is free - there are no entrance fees.

In order to purchase a vehicle, you must have a valid drivers license or identification card from any state or country.  If you do not have a drivers license, you can still purchase a vehicle, but you cannot drive it off our premises.  We can tow it for you for a nominal fee.

Vehicles are sold to the highest bidder.  The successful bidder must pay in full at the time of sale.  For your convenience, we accept cash, checks and all major credit cards.  Once the vehicle has been purchased, we will provide the appropriate documents for registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Vehicles must be registered at the Department of Motor Vehicles within 5 days of the sale date.  Buyers are urged not to drive their vehicles or park them on public streets until they have been registered.  Buyers should always keep their lien sale auction paperwork and receipts with them until the vehicle has been fully registered.  License plates are removed from all vehicles prior to the sale and destroyed, so new ones must be issued.

If a vehicle is appraised at over $4,000, special conditions apply.  Although the vehicle must be paid in full at the time of the purchase, it must be held in our facilities for another 10 days to allow the owner to redeem it.  If the owner claims it, the sale amount will be refunded the buyer.

All vehicles are sold as-is.  There are no warranties whatsoever, and all sales are final.  It is the responsibility of the buyer to determine the year and model of the vehicle, the condition of it's safety and control systems, and general operating condition prior to bidding.  Once a bid is placed on a vehicle, it cannot be withdrawn.  If you fail to pay for a vehicle for which you have successfully bid, you will be ejected from the sale and will not be allowed to attend any future auctions.

Our auctions are conducted with professionalism.  We ask that our patrons conduct themselves in the same manner.  Attendees at the auction may be ejected and barred from future attendance if his/her behavior is abusive towards Hagerty's staff or other attendees.
